Fire engines are purpose-built vehicles designed for fire-suppression and rescue missions. They are grouped into four main categories-extinguishing, aerial, specialized-service, and support-each with distinct capabilities:
Extinguishing Fire Engines
Water-tank engines: carry water for general fires and supply other appliances.
Foam engines: deliver high-expansion foam to smother flammable-liquid fires (petro-chemical plants).
Dry-powder engines: combat electrical or chemical fires.
CO₂ engines: discharge carbon dioxide for fires involving precision instruments.
Aerial Fire Engines
Turntable-ladder engines: ladders ≥ 32 m for mid-rise access.
Hydraulic-platform engines: working heights up to 55 m; platforms lower firefighters directly into the fire floor.
Specialized-Service Fire Engines
Lighting units: generator-fed masts illuminating ≥ half a football field at night.
Heavy-rescue units: carry hydraulic spreaders, cutting tools, air bags for non-fire emergencies.
Support Fire Engines
Equipment carriers: transport spare hoses, breathing apparatus, pumps, etc., ensuring front-line replenishment.
All types are fitted with warning lights, sirens and ancillary gear such as SCBA and protective clothing. Regional fleets choose red (longest wavelength = high visibility) or high-visibility yellow for enhanced road safety.
